The winery
A long-standing tradition of good wine, together with the concerted effort, geniality and savoir-faire of our people resulted in the creation of the largest Cariñena D.O winery, and indeed, the largest winery in the Autonomous Community of Aragón. Grandes Vinos y Viñedos was founded as a company on 1st September 1997 to channel the sales of six Cariñena D.O. co-operatives. The new winery installations have involved large investments in infrastructures, which facilitate our work. Approximately 10 million euros have been invested in 60,000 m2 of facilities, inaugurated on 26th June 2002 by the President of the Autonomous Community of Aragón, Mr. Marcelino Iglesias Ricou.
Our winery is fully equipped with the necessary technology and human resources to be able to respond to a competitive market that demands quality. We have more than 1,000 partners in the six towns in which the 5,800 hectares of vineyards are located: Aguarón, Alfamén, Cariñena, Cosuenda, Mezalocha and Villanueva de Huerva. All of the wine produced is from our own vineyards and is commercialised by Grandes Vinos y Viñedos.
Its environment
Grandes Vinos y Viñedos is located in the heart of the Cariñena D.O., an area with one of the greatest wine-growing traditions in Spain.
Wine-growing dates back to ancient times. Upon the arrival of the Romans the region was inhabited by Celtiberian tribes that drank wine mixed with honey. In the Middle Ages the surface area of vineyards increased and in 1585, when Felipe II visited Cariñena, the townspeople built two fountains of wine in his honour. In Spanish literature there are numerous references to the excellence of this area's wine, such as those of Cervantes in his immortal work of "Don Quixote" and José Zorrilla in his famous "Don Juan Tenorio".
