In the Northwest of Granada, in the province of Jaén, is placed the town of Alcalá la Real.
The history of this area let us meet, on each of its places, the influence of the Arabic culture in the Iberian Peninsula. Irrigation channels, water wheels, mills, watchtowers, castles… remain as witnesses of this period.
A defensive network, headed by the Fortress of “la Mota” of Alcalá la Real, made this area the last border between the Kingdom of Granada and the Christian Kingdoms. “Key, guard and defence of the Castilian Kingdoms” is the motto of this city coat of arms.
Something that distinguished Al-Andalus (Arabic name of Andalusia) is the use of water. The water, something abundant in this place, and it use, was the origin of the first settlements in the Ribera Baja, near the Velillos riverbanks.
Along the riverbanks, many water mills were built. The water flow moved the stones and mechanisms milling wheat. With the flour they made bread in the “tahonas”, as they called bakeries in that period.
This Rural House is one of the five mills in this village. Was called “Molino de Abajo” Lower Mill and it was working until well into the 50s. |

Once in your apartment, you can meet many different paths surrounds the house. Walking along the nearby river, under the shades of the trees. Or if you wish to, you can walk along many tracks around the house with olive trees, holm-oak woods and fountains.
The Colomera and Cubillas reservoirs can offer some water activities 30 or 45 minutes by car from the houses.
If you want to practice winter sports there is a modern Sky Resort in Sierra Nevada, near Granada. (1 hour 15 minutes by car from the house).
Alcala la Real has a rich historic heritage, due to its Roman, Arab and finally Christian past. Its fortress known as “Fortaleza de la Mota” is the town symbol, at 1033 metres height, with its citadel and towers, its church (built from 1530 to 1637), houses, gardens, etc.
Alcaudete
Village with a population of 12000. Roughly fought by Arabs and Christians, as many cities in Jaén, was finally conquered in 1345. In the top of a hill, some towers remains in the castle. In the town, San Pedro Church (XVI century) mudejar stile.
Priego de Córdoba
In the heart of Andalusia, placed in mountains, Priego is surrounded by olives. A singular village, with history, art, traditions, culture and landscapes.
Córdoba
Ancient capital city of the CaliphKingdom. In Córdoba you can visit one of the nicest mosques in the world from the VIII-X centuries, the Roman bridge, and many museums.
Granada
One of the prettiest cities in Andalusia. Granada has a wide touristic offer like the AlhambraPalace, the Albaicin & Sacromonte areas, the Cathedral, SciencePark, etc. |
