| · General description: |
The Manor was built in 1511 by the Díaz Varela family in the enclave of Rosende. One of the descendants of the lineage , Carlos Recarey Díaz Varela, attained the viceroyalship of Mexico , later returning to his homeland to fulfil different public offices (such as royal tax collector and governer of Lugo). It was he who undertook the extension of the initial building towards the end of the 18th century. The decoration of the chapel and drawing rooms, with exceptional frescos painted by Juan Bernardo Castinandi , a Galician painter trained in Rome, which lend a unique courtly palace air to the Manor , dates back to this period.
The Díaz Varela family has had a significant presence within the cultural world on both sides of the Atlantic. Outstanding amongst the latter inhabitants of the house were Roberto Díaz Varela, newspaper editor of "La Marina" of La Havana, Dalmiro de la Válgoma y Díaz Varela, chronicler of Monforte de Lemos and perpetual secretary of the National History Academy, or Elena Quiroga, one of Galicia's most relevant writers, also a member of the Language Academy.
The Manor is known by the name of "The Misses' House" within the area owing to the sisters who lived there at the middle of the last century and who were the last of the Díaz Varelas to well there.
The original L-shaped ensemble was extended at the end of the 17 hundreds, conferring a characteristic 18th century look to the whole building. Its access then developed into a large courtyard, around which the ensemble of the various agricultural outbuildings was established, and surrounding the whole, the actual village of Rosende emerged, thus converting the courtyard into a square. At the same time, a paved courtyard was built at the back, enclosed by an austere outbuilding which housed the stales.
The building has been renovated, entirely maintaining its original constuction with thick granite walls, hundred year old chestnut floorboards , which rest on solid beams and rustic moulded wooden ceilings.
On the same principle, the original furniture of the Manor has been preserved, which provides a unique authenticity that takes one back into an unforgettable 18th century atmosphere: the chapel, the sun lounge, the hearth, together with the ample wine cellars and other nooks , show visitors the noble charms of this manor house which seems to have stood still in time. |

In the vincinity, various other options for active tourism , such as canoeing, are available. Guests from the Manor House may also make use , free of charge, of the Green Fee (9 holes) at the local golf course , about 10 Km away.
The deep gorges shaped by the courses of the rivers Miño , Sil and Cabe began to harbour , from the 4th century onwards , numerous hermitages , which were later grouped together forming monastries. The continual renovation of monastic life and the foundation of new congregations throughout the Middle Ages , turned the area into Sacred Riverbanks ( Ribeira Sacra) , unrivalled throughout Western Europe, since only in the East , in Athos or in the Sinai, can a similar assembly of religious orders be found.
The importance of its architectonic ensemble , located in a natural spot of exceptional beauty, makes the Ribeira Sacra one of the treasures of the Galician and , even, European heritage, which largely maintains its original features.
ART
As the center of the Ribeira Sacra , this municipality and its area are overspread with numerous artistic remains from different periods, including important military settlements. Consequentially, San Esteban de Ribas de Miño, San Miguel de Eiré, San Fiz de Cangas, Pombeiro, Pinol... constitute the most important rural Romanesque ensemble in Galicia, not to mention the monastries of Ribas de Sil, Ferreira, Santa Cristina, San Vicente, Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, which all help to confirm the cultural relevance of the area.
CRAFTMANSHIP
In this respect, the Gundivós pottery is specially relevant and whose most important piece is the "xarro" , a pitcher intimately related to the famous Amandi wine.
Furthermore, the forges whose most singular activity involved the elaboration in copper, by the last of the Galician manufacturers, of stills and distilling vessels which have supplied this land of "aguardienteiros" (people who distill a native liquor made from grape refuse after winemaking and whose local name "aguardiente" means "firewater").
TRIPS
The Romanesque Route is an essential tour of numerous churches throughout the area. Furthermore, Monforte de Lemos, less than 10 minutes away, possesses a truly important historical and cultural ensemble. Its castle, monastry and museums are an unavoidable visit.
But if what one prefers is an intense contact with nature, one may choose the Sil gorges, either contemplating them from one of their spectacular viewpoints or on board a catamaran which can be caught at the nearby jetty.
Finally, there are the options of trekking along the luxuriant Cabe riverbanks or of skiing at the Manzaneda Ski Resort, about 60Km away, as attractive alternatives.
GASTRONOMY
This land is distinguished by the authenticity of its produce and the exquisite elaboration of its dishes .
Such dishes as "Pulpo á Feira" (Market-style Octopuss), "Empanadas" (Bread Pies with different fillings), "Vitela" (veal) , "Lacón con grelos" (boiled semi-cured shoulder of pork with turniptop buds) , stewed octopuss, eels , wines such as the rightly famous Amandi , desserts such as "Filloas" (pancakes) , quince sweetmeat , cream horns ... which will leave an unforgettable impresion on guests, unless the "Queimadas" (a ritual burning of the local liquor which has had several things added to it and leaves a warm mild tasting syrupy beverage with a kick to it) or the "Orujos" (different liquors made from the grape refuse) of the land have succeeded in impairing their memories! |
