The Cabo de Gata - Níjar Natural Park is a 30km long coastal strip along the Costa Blanca, made from a sub-desert mountain range which has produced some of the most wonderful beaches and coves in Spain. The park covers some 38,000 hectares of land and another 12,000 hectares of which is under water. There are about 3,500 inhabitants in the área. The climate is Mediterranean and it has an average annual temperatureof about 20° C, the average sea temperature is 17.7°C and it receives approximately 3,000 hoursof sun a year. This makes it one of the hottest year round places on the peninsular. Originally the coastal areas were inhabited by fishermen and this is still evident as you will often find small fishing crafts drawn up on the beach. The fishing and sports harbour at San José is a major attraction. |
