| » Information about Avila. |
Ávila is a province of western Spain, in the southern part of the autonomous community of Castile-Leon. It is bordered by the provinces of Toledo, Cáceres, Salamanca, Valladolid, Segovia, and Madrid.
The capital city is Ávila, a walled town ... The walled enclosure dates back to the Middle Ages. The wall controlled the entrance of provisions and merchandise, and also isolated the city, guarding it against the potential outbreak of a plague or epidemic, in addition to its obvious defensive function. It is shaped like an irregular rectangle, with crenellated towers and round turrets. It has nine gates that provided access to the city, of which the most spectacular is the Gate of Alcázar. It was declared a National Monument in 1884.
The whole city houses many corners of great artistic value. The Sierra de Gredos lies not too far away. This is one of the most important natural spaces on the Peninsula.
The autonomous community of Castile-Leon (Spanish Castilla y León) is the country's largest — in fact, it is the largest subnational political division in the European Union. It is formed by the union of two ancient kingdoms: Old Castile and Kingdom of León, several times separated and reunited in the Middle Ages. |
