| » Information about Barcelona. |
Thanks to a wine culture dating to Phoenician times, the Iberian peninsula offers tremendous variety in its indigenous grapesfrom the Baga of the Douro to the Xarel-lo of Penedès. Penedès lies to the north of Barcelona, and together with Conca de Barberà is a Denominación de Origen/DO of Catalunya.
After phylloxera devastated France's vineyards in the last century, Penedès became a mass wine producer for the French market. These people-filler/afarta pobles wines were supplanted in the 1950s by wines of increasing quality, among them the sparkling cavas of Penedès.
Following the Route of the Cistercians through DO Conca de Barberà, monastery and winery appear as golden rocky outcrops on gentle slopes, where vineyards surround centuries-old family farms, in turn surrounded by the lands of ancient monasteries like Poblet. Thanks to the monks, viticulture was preserved and prospered under the long Moorish occupation. As autumn mists descend over the vineyards, Poblet's bells call villagers to vespers, as they have done for nearly a millenium. |
